Charles Metcalfe, Volunteer at London Friend
What was your experience of coming out as an LGBT+?
I was bullied little bit for bring gay both prior to coming out as others assumed before I knew as I spoke in a posh accent. After coming out I faced a lot of prejudice from my peers. I did find a few true friends along the way.
What was the definitive moment in making this decision?
I had a big crush on a friend of mine and we ended up having my first intimate experience together. Although he decided he was not gay.
What questions do people need to consider before coming out?
The key questions you should consider is
♥ Who you feel will be there for you.
♥ Who you'll come out to first.
What are your favourite books/art/films about coming out?
Harry Potter: The symbolism here of discovering your true self was key part of my coming out I feel.
Films: Make the Yuletide Gay. Is a great film about coming out.
Art work: I would consider art work more of an exploration personal and it wasn't specifically connected
Based on your individual experience what advice would you give to someone wanting to come out?
The advice I would give is to come to people individually and only to those who you want to know. If you do research you can find services like London Friend or in my case Outline Surrey that can help.
